Tips for Privacy

Use a Dumbdroid device as your daily driver in minimalist mode

By default, Dumbdroid uses open source software when possible and has no preinstalled software created by a Big Tech company when used in minimalist mode. It has the essential functionality to work as your daily driver without you needing to spend hours configuring it that you would have to go to if installing a custom ROM manually.

Use Airplane mode to avoid broadcasting your location.

Unfortunately, as long as a mobile is connected to the cellular network, your location is being broadcast to your cellular provider. One way to avoid this is to use airplane mode – using Wifi when possible and selectively turning it off to make calls. This also hugely improves the battery life and helps batch your notifications. For the battery life alone this is worth doing!

Use a browser with ad-blocking and tracker removal

By using the preinstalled Brave browser, ads and trackers are automatically disabled to ensure you can browse the internet without being traced. As a bonus, you won’t be bothered by pesky ads!

Use open source alternatives to applications

The applications that come with the Simple Phone are when possible open source and without tracking. Make sure to use these and applications installed via our minimalist app store e which have a low tracker score.

Ensure you use messaging applications with End-To-End encryption and avoid SMS

Most common messaging clients use End-To-End encryption

- iMessage

- WhatsApp

- Signal (the best for privacy!)

This means that only you and the person you are sending the message to can read your messages. However, they can still forward these messages on! We would advise never to talk about something truly private electronically and leave this for in person.

Use the phone as little as possible

Whilst you can take measures to reduce your digital footprint online, there will always be a trail left somewhere – the best we can do is minimize it. Putting your phone down and engaging with the real world is the most effective and free way to ensure that your activities and behaviors are not being tracked!
